Carlton resident Phillis Philpot challenges the roles prescribed for women in 1950s society. Her feminist views and desire for independence underpin her life choices, one of which was to become a top-notch shorthand court reporter for the Supreme Court of Victoria. She was aware that this is typically a male-dominated profession, making her more determined to enjoy success. Phillis’s shorthand experience in the courtroom highlights a possibility when she believes overlooked shorthand notes may contain vital evidence.
The intuitive Phillis launches her business “Phil Philpot, Forensic Phonographer”. Her first of three cases involves transcription of a deceased woman’s diary. It unexpectedly reveals disturbing information about a murder, presenting a twist which is learned too late to prevent an execution, but not too late to reveal the truth.
Meanwhile, Phillis volunteers to teach shorthand to immigrant women who arrived in Australia under the “proxy bride” scheme. A missing student and a scratchy shorthand note received in the mail introduce Phillis to a web of deceit. By tracing the missing woman, Phillis uncovers human trafficking and an earlier murder.
A visit to a secondhand bookshop launches Phillis into an investigation involving two schoolgirls. The cause of their deaths was haphazardly investigated, leaving their parents shattered and two murders undetected. The cover-up of their deaths, which had been described as a suicide pact, was instigated by the girls’ prestigious school. It reeked of intolerance and assumptions surrounding the students’ relationship.
When daily newspapers highlight her successful forays, Phillis is confident she has harnessed a potential-laden career opportunity. A young detective at Russell Street Headquarters is equally delighted to be working with Phillis. He not only enjoys her company, but is receiving accolades for the success of cases where Phillis Philpot’s expertise has been applied.
Phillis is excited that this is just the beginning.
