About Readings Hawthorn

Originally designed by Christopher Cowper in 1916, our Hawthorn shop is housed in the historic ANZ bank building and has been interiorly designed by the exceptional Kerstin Thompson Architects. Blending original structural features with warm, modern fixtures our newly opened space provides a rich experience for the Hawthorn community.

Accessibility

Main: During trading hours, the main front door is generally open and the shop is accessible for people whose mobility is impaired and wheelchair users. The shop floor after the main entrance is slightly raised. With this in mind, customers have the option to use a ramp or small set of stairs with a handrail support to enter the shop. In rare cases, the front entrance may be closed due to bad weather. Clear signage can be found throughout the shop, but there are some areas where shelves and display blocks are spaced more closely together, which may make it difficult to move around comfortably. There is a seating area located in-store, which provides a place for people to rest.

Kids: During trading hours, the Kids front door (left hand side of building with mural on front facade) is generally open and the shop is accessible for people whose mobility is impaired and wheelchair users. There is no step or incline for entering the shop. Clear signage can be found throughout the shop, and there is enough space for a wheelchair to be manoeuvred the length of the store.

If you have any difficulties moving around the shop, encounter hard-to-reach titles, or require a pen and paper to communicate, staff members are always on hand to help. If you have any specific questions regarding accessibility, please contact the shop directly.

Manoeuvring in between the shops is possible two ways. There is an interior breezeway connecting both shops, however, travelling this way customers will encounter two small steps. Alternatively, customers can move between the shops via the Glenferrie Road footpath to avoid any steps.
