Returns & exchanges

Returns policy for online purchases

Sometimes you may want to return items purchased on our website. We want you to be happy with your purchase, so will endeavour to accommodate your request where we can. To make a return request, please contact our online customer service via email at [email protected] or by phone on (03) 9341 7729. Please read our guidelines below before making a request.

Change of mind

Readings is willing to offer an exchange or refund for items due to 'change of mind', if the request is submitted to our online team within two weeks of the date you receive your order. Requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by our online team. As we support 'special orders' through our website, in assessing your request we will take into account our ability to resell the item; for example, if you put in a special order for the 1979 Melway we are unlikely authorise a return for 'change of mind'.

If we do accept your ‘change of mind’ return request:

  • Books must arrive at our warehouse or shops in as-new condition and items shipped sealed or shrink-wrapped must be returned in original sealed/shrink-wrapped condition.
  • Return postage will be at your expense and will not be paid for by Readings. Alternatively, items may be returned to one of our shops with prior approval from our online team.

Damaged or Faulty Items

Readings will never knowingly send damaged or faulty items. If you have received the wrong item(s), an item has arrived damaged or faulty, or an item in any way does not meet the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law, we will offer an exchange or refund.

Please contact our online customer service team via email at [email protected] or by phone on (03) 9341 7729. Please note, umbrage regarding the plot, cover, or the author’s argument doesn’t mean an item is faulty under Australian Consumer Law.

If you have further questions regarding a return, please contact our online team here.

Returns policy for in-shop purchases

Readings is willing to accept returns for items purchased in our shops, if you return the item to the shop of purchase within 14 days, with proof of purchase. If the item is in as-new condition, once the return is accepted you will receive store credit, or you can exchange the item for something of equal value. Refunds will only be given for goods that are faulty.

We do not accept 'change of mind' returns for vinyl or special orders unless faulty. Please note, umbrage regarding the plot, cover, or the author’s argument doesn’t mean an item is faulty under Australian Consumer Law.

If you have received the wrong item(s), an item has arrived damaged or faulty, or an item in any way does not meet the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law, we will offer an exchange or refund. To organise a return of a faulty item, return to the store of purchase or contact our online customer service team via email at [email protected] or by phone on (03) 9341 7729.

Payment & refunds

Q: How will I receive my refund?

A: If you have been approved to receive a refund, the credit card used for the transaction will be refunded. We cannot return funds to a card other than the one used to make payment.

Q: I got a refund but it was not the same amount I paid. Why?

A: This happens when you pay in your local currency instead of Australian dollars. The amount of your refund depends on the exchange rate. When we refund you, the amount you get back reflects the exchange rate on the day we issue the refund. Exchange rates change every day so the amount you get back won’t match what you paid. The Australian dollar value of your payment and your refund will always be the same.

Q: What if I need to return an order purchased with a gift card?

A: If a refund is requested for an order where a gift card was used for, or as part of, the payment, once the return is approved the refunded amount will be credited to a new gift card. It cannot be returned to the original gift card.
