The Sugarcane Kids are back with another mystery to solve. Rare and exotic animals have started disappearing around town, including Gloria the eclectus parrot, a much-loved member of the community. Andy and his friends have their suspicions, but the adults just aren’t listening. So, it’s up to the Sugarcane Kids to follow the clues and find the missing animals before it’s too late!
I was on the judging panel for The Readings Children’s Prize in 2022 when The Sugarcane Kids and the Red‑Bottomed Boat took home the win, so of course, I put my hand up to review this one. And it was an absolute treat to dive into another mystery adventure with the Sugarcane Kids! Charlie Archbold is a natural at writing captivating and fun stories that will keep both children and adults engaged.
The Sugarcane Kids and the Empty Cage is a romp of a mystery adventure, but it’s also a story of friendship, family and standing up for what is right. With a unique Australian setting and a diverse group of friends, this is an adventure story that will appeal to practically every child aged 8+.
