It’s Lily’s birthday and that means it’s also time for her to start at a new school – for witches!! This lovely graphic novel is a classic story about a reluctant new witch discovering that she has been bestowed with uniquely strong powers, and, of course, she may end up saving the day! It is perfectly pitched for young readers with a balance of gentle humour, charming detail and scary action.

The book is studded with enchanting features: each witch has a magic gem and a familiar, and there are pages to explain the unique powers of each gem, profile the cute critters that are familiars and there is even a recipe for a magic cleaning slime. I’m confident those who read this will eagerly await the next instalment. This is an excellent choice for kids who might be keen on the idea of big chapter books like the Harry Potter or Nevermoor series, but aren’t quite ready to read them independently yet. For ages 7+.
