Knowing your ancestry is more than just collecting names and entering them on a chart. It’s about discovering and telling the stories of those whose traditions, characteristics, and stuff we have inherited. An individual’s memories are based on unique, individual experience, however, our memories are strengthened, shaped and coloured by our recollections, stimulated by stories, images, objects and places. As we recall and retell our memories, these memories form a piece in the larger story of who we are. Identifying these images and objects, and finding our places, therefore become a vital part of understanding why we are the way we are.

Part Three of Family History; A Different Focus assists the beginning genealogist in the processes of identifying and dating old photographs and family treasures, and putting their ancestors in their geographical and historical place at a particular time.

While it is an accompaniment to the Family History; A Different Focus’ workshops, the workbook stands alone as an invaluable guide to the how, when, where, what and why of Family History for the beginner.

Christine Sutton has been a genealogist and family historian for over thirty years. She holds a Diploma in Family History from the University of Tasmania, and qualifications in Education from several Universities. With a background in teaching, learning design and course development for all ages, she has a strong commitment to lifelong learning. Now retired, she spends much of her time sharing what she has learned with those commencing their journey into their heritage.
