The Melbourne Writers Festival has opened tonight with a keynote address from Simon Callow and the announcement of the winners for The Age Book of the Year Awards.

James Boyce’s intricately-researched investigation into our history - 1835: The Founding Of Melbourne And The Conquest Of Australia - has been named The Age Book of the Year, alongside picking up the award for non-fiction. In Mark Rubbo’s review he spoke of the relevance of this book to a contemporary audience and it seems others agree.

The winner for poetry is Mal McKimmie for The Brokenness Sonnets I-III And Other Poems and Gillian Mears has been awarded winner in the fiction category for her much-loved Foal’s Bread.

A big congratulations to all the shortlisted and winning authors and publishers.
