Beginners guide to Taylor Jenkins Reid
Taylor Jenkins Reid has taken the world by storm with her incredible novels that read more like true stories than works of fiction. The way she writes makes you feel as if you're eavesdropping on conversations at an exclusive party, rather than reading it off the page.
So now you're thinking, okay Lucie, this sounds amazing but what TJR book should I pick up first? Well I've written this guide to help you decide, but I promise you won't be able to stop at one.
For the music lovers...
Daisy Jones and The Six
We love broken, beautiful people. And it doesn't get much more obviously broken and more classically beautiful than Daisy Jones.
1970s rock group Daisy Jones and The Six were at the height of popularity when suddenly the band split up. But nobody knew why ... until now. Written as in adocumentary-esque style, each character reflects on the bands rise to fame and the sex, drugs and drama they experienced along the way.
I was completely drawn into the world of Daisy Jones and the people in her who orbited her. The story feels a little like Fleetwood Mac fan fiction and I was so here for it! I honestly could not put this book down and you won't be able to either.
Daisy Jones and The Six has recently been adapted for television, so make sure you read it before you see it!
For the Hollywood gossip addicts...
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Evelyn always leaves you hoping you’ll get just a little bit more. And she always denies you.
In the 60s Evelyn Hugo was the Hollywood movie star with the world at her fingertips. But in the 80s, she made the decision to leave her glamourous life behind and bid farewell to show business. No one knew the truth about her scandelous life, until now. When she reveals all to Monique Grant, an unknown magazine reporter, things get interesting.
Although the title suggests this is a story about the seven men who married Evelyn, it is actually about the powerful love between two women. You will want to reread this the minute you finish it.
For the surfers and dreamers...
Malibu Rising
Just because it is in Malibu's nature to burn, so was it in one particular person's nature to set fire and walk away.
It’s 1983 and the night of the Riva family’s annual end-of-summer party. Anyone who is anyone will be stepping through the doors of supermodel Nina Riva’s beachside Malibu mansion. Every year, epic things happen, and this year will be no different. By midnight, the party will be out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames.
This is an utterly engrossing read that will make you fall in love with all the Riva children. I just wanted to reach into the book and give them all a hug. Malibu Rising is a beautiful story of the power of family and the real price of choosing fame over everything else.
For the sports addicts...
Carrie Soto is Back
We live in a world where exceptional women have to sit around waiting for mediocre men.
Carrie Soto is the best tennis player in the world. Until Nicki Chan ties her for most grand slam titles won. Although she’s now 38-years-old and considered ‘too old’ to play, Carrie can’t just let someone take her title. It’s time to come out of retirement.
Carrie Soto Is Back is a story of loss, on and off the court. But it is also a story of sexism and racism in sport, of families and relationships, and the sacrifices we all make to achieve our dreams. Even if you aren't a fan of sports, you will love this book! Just like the rest, you won't be able to put it down.
