Yayoi Kusama: From Here to Infinity
Sarah Suzuki,Ellen Weinstein
This colourful children’s book tells the story of the renowned artist Yayoi Kusama and her quest to cover the world in polka dots - from here to infinity!
Growing up in the mountains of Japan, Yayoi Kusama dreamed of becoming an artist. One day, she had a vision in which the world and everything in it - the plants, the people, the sky - was covered in polka dots. She began to cover her paintings, drawings, sculptures, and even her body with dots. As she grew up, she traveled all around the world and brought her dots with her, spreading them over big cities and small islands alike. Some people thought the dots were tiny, like cells, and others imagined them enormous, like planets. Yayoi said, ‘Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity.’
Written by Sarah Suzuki, a MoMA curator, with illustrations by Ellen Weinstein, this colorful book tells the story of an artist whose work will not be complete until her dots cover the world, from here to infinity.
Review
Angela Crocombe
Yayoi Kusama is one of the most exciting artists working today. Once you have seen one of her dot paintings, books or installations, she is impossible to forget. This picture-book biography follows her life from a young child who saw dots everywhere in nature, growing up in Japan, to moving to New York at the age of 28, struggling to survive until her first exhibition and her eventual success.
As the pages progress, we see more and more dots on each page, perhaps representing Kusama’s success and her fascination with infinity. At the end of the book are pictures of many of Kusama’s most famous paintings and installations. The illustrations by Ellen Weinstein are stunning and well suited to Kusama’s work, with every page showing flourishes of dots and patterns that reflect the art. This is a fascinating introduction to a very accessible contemporary artist that will be enjoyed by children aged 5 to 8 – and art lovers of any age
