Throwaway

Throwaway transports readers to the post-WW II streets of North Harrow, a suburb of northwest London, where the author's formative years (1945-1970) unfold. Born to a working-class couple, he is left to navigate the challenges of his early years alone, with no guidance beyond his own instincts. Little time is spent at home, for the menacing streets are easier to deal with than the indignities waiting behind closed doors.

As a young adult, his naivete draws him into terrifying encounters with sinister characters, causing him to question the inherent goodness in people. Despite this, he discovers a refuge in the youth-driven cultural revolution of the sixties: Soho's lively jazz clubs, the rebellious beat counterculture, and the power of his own words. Eventually, he escapes to the seaside town of Hastings, where peace and stability replace his erratic youth.

Told through a series of colourful vignettes- some daunting, others amusing-Throwaway dismisses self-pity and sentimentality. Instead, it is a testament to hope, resilience, and the quiet strength of a young man who refuses to be defined by his past. A story of transformation and unyielding spirit, it reminds us that even the most fractured beginnings can lead to remarkable journeys.
