Kaos Benedict started involving himself in the civil war wagging in the country of Ebony inadvertently by learning shadow magic, i.e. the only form of magic that humans can learn. Unfortunately he's hit a glass-ceiling and butted-heads with his shadow magic instructor, Ijaech, who just happens to lead the rebellion against the crown. Kaos gets the "hell out of dodge" before Ijaech figures out he's made off with Ijaech's prized black magic book, and returns to his hometown of Patella for some much needed rest and relaxation. Unfortunately (or fortunately) it's cut short when General Daragon of the Ebony military is waiting there to draft him.
