Mother Material is a coming-of-age story set in urban Essex County, New Jersey during the early 20th century. It chronicles the life of a young girl as she weathers through two world wars and the Great Depression.

Life is difficult for young Emily Miller and her family. Papa works long hours shoveling coal, while Mama seems more concerned with her own reputation than caring for her children. One day, Emily finds herself the temporary caregiver of her baby brother when her father's drinking and mother's abandonment lead to financial ruin and abuse. Forced to move nearly a dozen times, she grows up quickly and eventually lands a job in a sweatshop.

Despite her many hardships, Emily evolves into an independent, resilient, and somewhat naive woman when she fancies and marries a damaged man. Is it possible for Emily to be a good wife and mother? Or will the past repeat itself?
