Memoirs of a Forgotten Home

Jason Hicks

For everyone, there is a somewhere that holds a special place in their heart. For Mark and his family, this place is the home his grandfather built before Mark was born. This house, and the land it sits on, continue to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of his family years after the family patriarch sold the property and moved away.

After a traffic accident caused a detour, an auction sign pointing down a dirt road catches Mark's attention. A house on a large plot of land with a lake was advertised on the sign.

Compelled to see if the house is the one his grandfather had built over fifty years ago, he follows the arrow pointing down the old country road. Soon he finds himself parked in the driveway of his grandparents' old home, watching as a mowing crew works to clean up the long-abandoned property to prepare for the big day.

After turning around to take a second look from the top of the hill, he heads back home as old memories begin to fill his mind. As the days pass, the memories continue to unfold, until he finds himself back at the old home the morning of the auction.

As he walks toward the house, the memories from his childhood take him back to the time his grandparents lived here. He soon finds himself sharing many of these memories with a couple men who were there with plans on bidding on the property.

From his grandfather's vision to build the home of his dreams, to stories of family gatherings, there is little he holds back. The memories of the joys of Easter egg hunts, where each of the grandchildren hoped to be the one to find the special egg that contained the money, to a tale of family tragedy that destroyed relationships between siblings, the memories flow freely.

The happy memories of days fishing, not a care in the world are mixed in with stories of battles with an older cousin visiting from out of state. The adventures this property had provided keep bubbling up, asking to be shared.

Recalling the dogs that had called the farm home over the years, they are remembered just as they were. Snoopy, the greatest hunting dog that ever lived, Buddy, the undisputed ruler of the land, and Peanuts, the cocky house dog that couldn't help but get himself in trouble.

The families most cherished story, one that began with a small ice-skating party and ended with Mark's father and uncle in a race against time to hide the events of the day from his grandfather keep his audience hoping for more.

Wandering further from the house, he soon finds himself alone.

As memories of hunting trips and camping adventures replay in his mind, the events of one of these camping trips leaves one to wonder how no one was severely injured or killed in the ill-advised adventure.

As the day progresses, a plan that threatens the home's future is uncovered. Will the memories of the past be enough to save the home, or will the memories soon be all that remain of the home?
