Cesar Chavez’s Last March

Born in Yuma, Arizona, in early life Cesar Chavez worked as a manual laborer and later served in the United States Navy in WWII. Chavez became an American labor leader and civil rights activist who, along with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. In life, Cesar brought many positive changes to many lives and even today his memory continues to inspire young and old alike. Denis O'Leary is a retired teacher and award winning author. This bilingual children's story and quiz introduces the life of Cesar Chavez. As a teacher in the Central Valley of California, Denis and fellow teachers were told that if they attended the funeral of Cesar Chavez, that they would be fired. Denis attended the historic funeral with two fellow educators. They were not fired. Other teachers asked Mr. O'Leary to write about the event so they could share with other students. Cesar Chavez's Last March is that story.
