Aven is a lynx shapeshifter with the social skills of a snapping turtle and the temper of an angry honey badger. She's the last person anyone looks to for help. Especially when a necromancer comes to the oasis village of Yunaii with one purpose: kill the shifters and turn them into an undead army. After her clan leaders choose deep-rooted pacifist traditions over any chance at defending themselves, Aven vows to stop the necromancer before they strike again. She'll defend her family and best friend, Mist, even if all she's got is her 'fight me' attitude.
Mist is a dragon shifter, who came to Yunaii to hide from the brewing war against the very necromancers threatening Aven's home. She wanted quiet and safe, but now that Aven is involved, her list of to-do's include: convincing the dragons not to cross the arid wastes and leave the other shifters to die, coercing the clan leaders into working together, and keeping the girl she loves from taking on the bad guys with nothing but her claws.
Only united will the shifters of Yunaii stand a chance at surviving the necromancer and their approaching war party. But defying the peace-keeping laws has a price. One worse than a simple reprimand.
