The people in the nation of Crum live in constant fear of being taken away by horrible creatures called the blackouts. The blackouts are known to attack people in public and take people away to never be seen again. However, for Ashley and Zeke, it's even worse. The two teenagers live on opposite ends of the same city and have never met, but have more in common than they think. Both of them have younger sisters that have always seemed to attract the blackouts in some sort of unexplainable way. When Ashley's sister is taken in the middle of the night, she chases after the blackout into the depths of the forest to try and find her sister. When Zeke's sister is taken less than two days later, he goes after his sister as well. When the two cross paths in the forest, they decide to work together to try and find their sisters. But as they get closer and closer to finding their sisters, they find themselves discovering secrets about the blackouts that were never meant to be uncovered.
