There isn’t a more odd pairing than Lynn Cummings, a women’s right activist who is swooned by a charming and handsome southern Baptist preacher, Pastor Dana Stewart. Lynn’s heart goes pitter patter for this man and the feeling is mutual, but the relationship can’t survive on love alone, as Lynn discovers a discriminatory practice at Pastor Stewart’s church: women are banned from the pulpit.
In Pastor Stewart’s shame, he tries to abolish the rule and angers the trustees, the Ginyard clan who begins doing everything they can to try to oust Stewart, even if it means coming after Lynn in the process. As she and Pastor Stewart draw together to fight the trustees, Lynn begins finding some disturbing things about Pastor Stewart’s past with women.
Lynn finds herself among in the middle of a church in disarray, with scandals exposed, leadership divided, a battered woman’s life hanging in the balance, and the female members that Lynn needs to stand up to the injustice, are under the mass hypnosis of the church’s lesser vessel doctrine. However, Lynn feels God moving, and figures maybe she not here by accident - that she’s here in First Baptist’s centennial year for reasons more pressing than love.
