For creating this unique literature that celebrates the fact that women, Latinas, and mothers are veterans too, the author was honored by the White House as a Woman Veteran Leader, Champion of Change and by her congressman on the Floor of the House of Representatives.
At the International Latino Book Awards, Captain Mama’s Surprise/La sorpresa de Capitan Mama won 1st Place in the Most Inspirational Children’s Picture Book - Bilingual category. The Military Writers Society of America bestowed a Gold Medal to this title in the Children’s Book category at their 2019 book awards gala.
