We first meet Palance at eleven years old on the day his father passes away in an automobile accident. Palance, who wished to follow in his father’s footsteps as a musician, is now left to find his way on his own. This is the story of his quest to find meaning in his life and to fit into his family of origin while searching for his place in the world.

This novel takes place in Chicago between 1987, when Palance learns of his father’s death to 2005, and the birth of Palance’s son. It takes place largely in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood and takes advantage of that area’s rich culture, including coffeehouses, parks, and complex characters.

It is the story of Palance’s growth as a musician, a songwriter, and a member of his family. It is the story of three friends who form a band in high school, experience their own challenges and triumphs, and with significant interruptions for each, maintain these friendships. It is the story of Palance’s search for romance and meaning, his experiences looking for where he fits in as a performer and a human being.

The novel is full of joy and sorrow, music and humor.
