The Last of the Mohicans is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, and one of the most famous works of American literature. Set during the French and Indian War (1754-1763), it is the second book in Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series and focuses on the struggle between British and French forces, along with the lives of indigenous peoples caught in the conflict.

The novel centers on Natty Bumppo (known as Hawkeye), a white man who has lived among the Native American tribes and has become a legendary figure. He is accompanied by his two Native American friends, Chingachgook, the last chief of the Mohicans, and his son Uncas, the last of the Mohican tribe. The story takes place against the backdrop of the French and Indian War, as British forces battle the French and their Native American allies.
