The Nibelungenlied (The Song of the Nibelungs) is a medieval epic poem written in Middle High German around 1200 CE by an unknown poet, likely from the region of present-day Austria or Germany. It is one of the most significant works of Germanic mythology and medieval literature, telling a tale of heroism, betrayal, and vengeance that has influenced countless later works, including Wagner's opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen.
