The Black Arrow: A Tale of the Two Roses (1888) is a historical adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, set during the Wars of the Roses (15th-century England). It blends romance, revenge, and swashbuckling action, much like Treasure Island but with a medieval setting.
The story follows Richard (Dick) Shelton, a young nobleman who discovers that his guardian, Sir Daniel Brackley, may have been involved in the murder of his father. As civil war rages between the Houses of York and Lancaster, Dick is caught in a web of treachery, shifting allegiances, and personal vengeance.
A secret outlaw group known as "The Black Arrow" seeks justice against Sir Daniel and other corrupt nobles, and Dick gradually realizes where his true loyalties lie. Along the way, he falls in love with Joanna Sedley, a young noblewoman disguised as a boy, and must fight to rescue her from an arranged marriage.
While not as famous as Treasure Island or Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Black Arrow is a thrilling medieval adventure with Stevenson's signature fast-paced storytelling and memorable characters.
