In the year 2051, the United Nations establish a domed colony on Mars. Three years later, a consolidation of communist nations establish a nearby colony. Due to limited resources, population growth is strictly limited and managed, with reproduction in both colonies being provided solely through surrogates. The fragile peace that is beginning to grow between the two colonies is shattered when a world war breaks out on Earth.

The father, mother and teenage daughter are fortunate enough to escape from Kentucky by riverboats and join one of the last wagon trains of the summer heading West. The gritty day-by-day adventures, tribulations and tragedies confronted on the trail are vividly told through the daughter's diary entries.
