The inspiration for A Tale of a Whale Named Snow came from an Alaskan newspaper article about a whale known to the locals as Snow, that was struck by a cruise ship in Glacier Bay and how the local people rallied together, recovered the skeleton and reconstructed the bones to build a monument.
