Known as Alaska's greatest poet, John Haines came to Alaska after WWII and founded Richardson, his homestead 80 miles outside of Fairbanks. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, an Alaska Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Poet's Prize, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Library of Congress, and the Aitken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry. His writings have been translated into French, Spanish, German, and Chinese. He died on March 2, 2011 in Fairbanks, Alaska.
