This book addresses two important but neglected realities about undergraduate teaching. First, teaching at the undergraduate level is very different from teaching at any other level and poses unique challenges that warrant specialized knowledge of pedagogical principles and strategies. Second, that most undergraduate instructors have little to no training in pedagogy and are mostly guided by the methods they themselves experienced as students. Today, the changed profile and aspirations of the Gen Z college entrants, and the emergence of advanced technology-based methods and tools have made undergraduate teaching very demanding. The 21st century undergraduate instructor faces enormous challenges in confidently managing tasks such as harnessing student learning; structuring and delivering course content effectively; designing assessment; ensuring student engagement & motivation; and using technology-based methods and tools.
Undergraduate Teaching attempts to fill this gap. Designed as a practice guide, it provides university instructors the requisite theoretical knowledge and practical competence to sharpen their teaching and learning management skills. The time-tested and research-validated strategies recommended in the book are explained with the help of figures, step-by-step instructions, and tips for successful implementation. The solutions proposed work across all disciplines, and should empower all university instructors whether they are new to the profession, or have been teaching for many years.
