Ilga Winicov Harrington was born in Riga, Latvia in 1935. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1956, her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958, and her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. In addition to her work in Molecular Biology, Ilga also enjoys traveling, gardening, cooking, and writing.
Ilga and her husband Rod have been fortunate to share their interests in science and travel for more than half of Ilga's life. She also stays in close contact with her sons Eric and Mark, and she enjoys her relationships with her two stepdaughters and her three grandchildren. Friendships have always been important to her, and Ilga finds much satisfaction in her numerous lifelong friendships.
