John was written at a time when there were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people still living who had walked with, talked with, or personally heard Jesus Christ. As a result, they had no trouble accepting His human existence, but many had trouble identifying with the divinity of Jesus Christ. Today many accept the divinity of Jesus, but struggle with accepting the reality of His actual existence as a man in history. John is intended to reconcile this dichotomy. In John, all the events surrounding Jesus, that he writes about, were chosen to secure a specific result. The most apparent example of this is in how John presents miracles. John records eight miracles. They are not in chronological order, but were chosen in an order to progressively show Jesus' growing authority, until even His enemies were forced to admit that only a deity could have performed them. 1. the turning of water into wine 5.
