Dublin High School ceased to exist as of June in 1974. When the school's era as a high school came to an end many years ago, the history of a very proud and decorated football program also came to an end. Now half a century later, the Dukes' history and their story have begun to fade away. From the late 1950's to the early 1970's, the Dukes were one of Virginia's top football teams, winning over 70% of their games over a seventeen-year span including several district and area championships in a day that state playoffs weren't yet in existence.
But the Dublin Dukes' story did not start there. It all began back in the early 1900's when the first high school in Dublin, Virginia opened in 1905 and began playing football in 1906. They went from a program that had winless seasons, didn't have a home field, didn't have a locker room, any training equipment, or even a coach at times. But slowly, the program got better and better until they climbed to become one of the best teams around. It's not only a story of a school and good football team, but of progress from struggling mightily to consistent success. And even half a century later, a story of great memories for so many who were a part of it that still persist.
