FOREWARD TO THE SECOND EDITION When my father first published this book, I was filled with excitement at the prospect of diving into the myriad stories he had shared with me throughout my life. To have those tales, along with others unknown to me, bound in one place was a dream come true. I devoured the book with an almost ravenous enthusiasm, only to find, to my dismay, that one of his favorite stories--the tale of the werewolf--was missing.
In disbelief, I read the book again, forgoing a night's sleep to ensure I hadn't overlooked it. The story was indeed absent. I confronted my father, who was initially as incredulous as I was. But then, with a chortle, he acknowledged the truth of the old myth: when you most want to remember, you often forget. In that moment, he dictated the missing chapter, which is now rightfully included in this second edition.
My father was a man of profound presence and charisma. He was as comfortable sharing a bench with the homeless in the park as he was debating with scholars or imparting wisdom on politics and religion.
