Aloha! Welcome to the Colors of Healing: Ola Kino book for kids. For those who don't know, Ola Kino means mental health in Hawaiian. So, translated this is a book about mental health for kids. You may have a few questions about why I chose the Hawaiian translation. Well, for starters, Hawaii is one of the most calm/chill places that I can think of. The Hawaiian culture is layed back and carefree. I want this book to be that source of freedom for children, and a place where they can talk about their feelings and how to manage them with a trusted adult.
In addition to my admiration for this way of life, my parents gave me the name Nalani. Nalani is a Hawaiian name that means "calm as the heavens." The theme of this book is not only an ode to the Hawaiian culture, but also a reflection of me. I hope this book helps children to feel seen and safe as they share their feelings.
This book blossomed from a school project. As a part of my E.G.I.S (eighth grade independent study), we were given the opportunity to choose anything in the world (within reason) to pursue for the majority of the year. I wanted to develop this book both to learn and to share mental wellness strategies for children. I am grateful for the help of my wonderful parents who helped me pursue this dream. I am also grateful for my mentors who answered every question I asked. This book would not have been completed without any of those spectacular people. I hope you enjoy "Colors of Healing: Ola Kino for kids."
