Hephaestion was born as Kine, an enslaved child of the Black Market. Violently ripped from his parents, he was purchased as a gift for a young prince of a powerful kingdom. Thrust into a role he wasn't prepared for in a world that he knew nothing about, he tries to learn how to navigate this new life. Surviving his childhood turned out to be easier than expected once he learned how to stay out of the way of those who would do him harm and kept out of trouble, for the most part anyways. His master, Prince Alexander Sorlen, became his best friend and he was cared for by the people who lived within the walls of the territory. When a neighboring kingdom threatens their peace, the king and the prince are forced to flee, leaving Hephaestion behind to build his own life. He grows up as a regular civilian, falls in love, and becomes a trusted member of the kingdom's society. The only thing that reminds him of his status is the collar he must wear each day. Years later, the king returns. Hephaestion's friend and master enters his life once more and for a moment it seems that they will simply fall back in to the friendship they had known before. Except they are no longer children and many things have changed in their years apart. Hephaestion's new life as he knows it is drawn to a close. Nothing could have prepared him for the events that followed and the new role he would ultimately have to step into if he wants to protect everything he had come to know and love.
