In Cuban santeria, OSHUN is known as la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, (Our Lady of Charity). She is a river orisha, or goddess, in the Yoruba religion. Considered one of the most powerful of all orishas! To officially be known as a daughter of Oshun you have to undergo some intense rituals. Enter the world of DAUGHTERS OF OSHUN-AFRO-CUBAN REFLECTIONS IN INWOOD MANHATTAN, NEW YORK.
Theresa C. Gaynord is a master at what she does. I have been impressed with her work for years. It goes without saying that her latest book, DAUGHTERS OF OSHUN, is unique. Every piece is brilliantly written, combining prose and poetry... prosimetrum...perfectly designed, sometimes flowing like prayers...sometimes with dark incantations.
As I read Theresa's words, images played out in my mind, the beauty of religion, myth, magic...landscapes filled with spirit, faith, and emotion. Interconnected stories, works of art arranged in a poet's gallery...there for viewing and study, wonders that I want to revisit repeatedly.
As a painter, certain lines, like the following, inspire me to render images. "Light then darkness patterns the sky, each their own way, leaving an imprint. Some say it's a miracle from the divine, while others believe the devil is cascading down to earth, flapping open the gates of hell for all to enter."
DAUGHTERS OF OSHUN is a book that should be read, and reread. It belongs in your library. It should be cherished and studied. Highly recommended.
