Well, a beard certainly wasn't going to put itself on McKenna's chin. And if a hundred years spent among the durgir in the mines of Mount Oer didn't put it there, then perhaps a beard quest just might.

McKenna, a monk of Malfaestus, was not born a duergi. But no one had bothered to tell her that. So she strikes out into the wide realm of Faie to find her beard, embroiling herself in a battle against legions of ilmaurte- reanimated corpses that will bring her face-to-face with her history... and her destiny. After finding herself in an out-of-the-way tavern and soundly trouncing Seth, a disgraced paladin of Bahamut, in a drinking game, the monk joins him on a bounty against a host of marauders haunting one of Beausun's prairie towns. Together, along with Ginni- a holvi bard with absolutely no filter- and Ginni's blinded, blighted holvi partner Tjena, they set off to the holvir's homeland to discover the source of this evil presence and the necromancer controlling it. The journey won't be easy. McKenna has to face prejudiced asafolk, Seth's troubled past, and enigmatic orgir before crossing the plains of Beausun to reach the great chasm of Naijor where the Doors of Death await. And of course, it's not just ilmaurte the party has to worry about. They also have to contend with Lianorran guilds whose corrupt leaders abuse the might of gods in their bid for power and Razan, an assassin claiming to represent Katarin, princess of the ilvir of Meliamne and Third Sorcere of the Guild of Moonbow. Not to mention daughter of Atosa, goddess of death. Katarin's desire to wield her mother's mantle causes her to awaken the Lich King, who possesses her and catalyzes the wave of destruction upon the land by trapping their immortal mother on the Material plane. McKenna has spent her whole life firm in the belief that, despite her long limbs, she was a duergi. And the discoveries she makes along her quest for a beard threaten to undo her.
