Following a collision with a stray asteroid, the cargo freighter Athena is forced to make a crash landing on a forest planet too far from any trade lanes for there to be much hope of rescue. When the stranded survivors set out to explore the region near the crash site they discover the planet to be inhabited by a primitive warrior race. Their plight becomes more desperate when the only choice the aliens offer is between becoming a slave work force or death. Ultimately, whether any of them survive will come down to the choices and resourcefulness of one woman. But the aliens have a secret in the heart of their caves, with unsuspected implications.
