Set in 1813 St. Michaels, Maryland, Hope is a young woman grieving the loss of her family to typhoid. She encounters Jacob, a Piscataway-English worker her father hires at their shipyard. Their unique bond deepens when Jacob performs an ancient Native American ritual, pledging to always return to her.

However, Hope's father intends for her to marry Simon, a greedy local seeking control of the shipyard. When Jacob proposes a plan to protect the town from British attack, Simon becomes jealous and schemes to blackmail Hope's father, putting her future in jeopardy.
