One of the factual events adding to the telling of this story occurred when I was billeted in a tented desert camp in the UAE and picked up a rock to bang home a loose tent peg only to see a scorpion crawl from beneath it and halt between my thumbs bringing a fleeting surge of heart stopping fear before I instantly reversed the rock to kill it. A classic example of normality turning in the blink of an eye to sudden terror.
