This story is about Link Lawrence finding happiness. His adventure begins when he abruptly left his job emptying porta-potties in a city called Probatis, went to sea, shipwrecked, and ended up on idyllic tropical Polynesian Isle de Belle. During his courageous struggle to survive he fights savages, tigers, and kimono dragons and endures a tsunami. To escape these dangers he builds a fabulous treehouse with separate living room, bedrooms, bathroom, and library called Halcyon. Link changed over time and became intellectual through reading and explored timeless topics like whether human nature is good or evil, is it better to be a satisfied pig, and this books theme whether humans are happier in civilization, as Hobbes claims, or nature. For the first time he experiences happiness through nature and learns nature is easily satisfied. During a dangerous trek he finds beautiful Annie and experiences passion, romance and love. Along the way he befriends a local savage Lilo who is the embodiment of Rousseau's noble savage. In the end Link returns to his former city, now called Decadere, and becomes disillusioned with the corruption, decay, and depressing dissipation of civilized society, and returns to his idyllic island.
