In 1977, Dr. Oscar Nelson Dowdell-Underwood became Indiana's first African American Teacher of the year. In addition, in 1977, he was nominated for National Teacher of the Year, 1999 Indiana Businessman of the Year, and 2018 Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction, among many other honors. In 1998, he appeared before the United States Congressional Committee on Small Businesses to testify concerning his teaching methods and philosophy.
