Trinity Pierce is alone and beset by ominous dreams. Her mother is ill, and the family is forced to move from the yellow fields of Amarillo to the dark winters of Pittsburgh. It is here where she begins her new life at a foreboding prep school. The building is a fortress of tall ceilings, winding staircases, and peculiar wooden carvings - each with their own tale to tell. Soon, Trinity notices the sinister carvings begin to call out to her, to move, to whisper dreadful stories no one else seems to hear. But wood can't move, so are the walls driven by some machine...some computer program? Weary of being alone for so long, Trinity meets a mysterious boy, Gabriel, who takes an immediate interest in her. With her friend, Ravie, at her side, Trinity is determined to solve the riddle of the carvings and their terrible tales...but is it all in her head? She believes she may be going crazy until she meets a handsome boy named Kane who can also see the walls move. Together, Trinity, Ravie, and Kane lead an expedition into the innermost rooms of the malevolent school and find a twisted tale of parallel worlds, good and evil, as well as creatures who have been searching for Trinity and her gift for thousands of years. Will Trinity trust her new friends and this beautiful boy named Gabriel, or will she succumb to the darkness that is coming for her? What part does Gabriel play in all this? Is he the savior she needs so badly, or is he just another part of her never-ending nightmare?
