Antioch to the Twenties
Elise S Benyo
Antioch to the Twenties by Elise Schott Benyo (b.1914 d. 1977) is the primary and fundamental work describing the life and times of California's earliest incorporated city. Benyo's grandfather was ship captain Kimball who brought the original settlers from New England to Smith's Landing, today's Antioch. The emigrants were the first to purchase land from pioneer John Marsh in 1849. In just twenty years after statehood, Antioch incorporates as California's first city.
Benyo originally researched the community and region in celebration of Antioch's Centennial celebration in 1951. She drew upon family photographs, letters and memorabilia carefully preserved by her father. Twenty years later, she and her students expanded the original research to include maps, pioneer interviews, text and an extensive bibliography to create Antioch to the Twenties. It is fitting that this 2nd edition - revised and expanded is released in celebration of Antioch's Sesquicentennial in 2022.
Long out of print and generally unavailable to the interested reader, this new edition provides an invaluable resource for students, academics and the general public. New residents to this oldest of California incorporated cities will experience the transformation of a community built on faith, manufacturing, shipping and industry. Today, Antioch, is home to a diverse suburban population of over 115,000 and is truly at the heart of the California Delta.
