When I was a boy, my kindergarten teacher would sometimes walk our class

down the street to the edge of the marsh to study marsh creatures. Now,

whenever I see periwinkles climbing up the tall blades of marsh grass or

collecting in the wet sand as the tide recedes, I always remember that first

learning encounter I had with them.
