Charlotte wants everything that her cousin is getting: the Life Partner, a Home, and the hope of children in the future. But she knows that that future is not for her. She will care for her Father until he is Gone. And then? She didn’t want to think about that. Who would take care of her when he couldn’t?
Father would say Longing gets you nothing, Charlotte. Work for what you want. Which would make her bristle (privately, of course. Father didn’t accept defiance), how was she to find a mate when she hardly left the home? There were so many things out there that could eat her! And it didn’t matter anyways. She couldn’t whistle, so nobody was going to find what they couldn’t hear in the first place.
It’s finally the first day of summer and the Joining for Rowan and Landon is happening. Charlotte has stiffened her back and put on her happy face in preparation for spending the evening with the extended family. Father was pleased she was ready to go when he arrived to escort her to the beach and they arrive at the party after only a slight incident.
A normal night with the family is disrupted when a storm passes overhead, and Charlotte runs the wrong way and falls into the river and is swept away.
When she awakens and finds herself in the strangest place she never even imagined, she must not only find the way out, but now she must find her way back home.
