Like most young men in the late 1960s, Nick embarks on a journey that forever changes the course of his life. Having enlisted in the United States Air Force straight out of high school, Nick finds himself in a foreign, hostile land. The constant chaos - bombings, firefights, and uncertainty of survival - harden Nick into becoming a shell of the caring person he once was and forces him to draw into question many long-held beliefs. His only reprieve from the torment of war are the seven days he spends in Australia, where he meets the beautiful and charismatic Laura.

Though the couple only share a fleeting few days together, Laura awakens feelings in Nick that have been shrouded by the war. They share an intimacy that neither has ever experienced before. Nick vows to return to her, but the situation in Vietnam only gets worse.

Nick survives long enough to serve out his one year tour of duty, but the atrocities of war and his PTSD have robbed him of many of his memories, including those special moments with Laura, so he returns home to Tennessee to build a life, start a family, and forget the thing's he done, but he's haunted by a foreboding evil that he just can't shake.

Determined to rid himself of this evil presence, Nick turns to the teachings of his faith for answers, but how can he rectify the things he's experienced with the things he's been taught? Luckily, his wife encourages him to question the traditions of his faith. But the memory of Laura remains in the back of his mind, just out of grasp. Could he possibly be in love with another?

Meanwhile, Laura faces many personal tragedies, all the while wondering if and when she will see Nick again. Eventually, she leaves Australia, hoping to find her lost love. But after so many years have passed, does she still have a place in Nick's life, or will Nick remain faithful to his family?
