Sao Tome and Principe is an island country located in the southeast of the Gulf of Guinea, in the center and west coast of Africa. They have a land area of about 1,001 km (2), made up of 14 islands, including Sao Tome, Principe, the Ilheu das Rolas and the Ilheu Caroco. By the end of 2020, the population recorded around 219 thousand inhabitants. The capital Sao Tome is the largest city in the country. In recent years, the Sao Tome government has proactively adopted measures to improve the investment environment, attract foreign investment, build roads and infrastructure, and actively develop the tourism industry and demand for offshore oil exploration, which help maintain stable growth in the economy. Sao Tome and Principe is an agricultural country whose main crop is cocoa production, 51 percent of the country's population is engaged in agricultural production, the main crops being cocoa, dried coconut, coffee and palm oil. Its privileged location, plus the wonderful natural landscapes, provide the country with vast tourism resources. At the same time, the oil industry is still in its early stages of development, and the country has relatively rich forest, biological and fishing resources. According to the "2021 World Investment Report" published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), it points out that by the end of 2020, Sao Tome and Principe had attracted US$310 million in stock of foreign direct investment. Based on statistics from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, by the end of 2020, China's stock of direct investment in Sao Tome and Principe was worth US$1.99 million. In 2020, the main export destinations of Sao Tome and Principe are the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal and Germany, with the main products being cocoa, palm oil, dried coconut, coffee. The main import origins of Sao Tome and Principe are Portugal, Angola, Togo and China, with the main products being food, fuel, industrial products and daily consumer goods.
