THE REMITTANCE MAN

K.B. ROSS

In the 1800’s Wyoming was experiencing a cattle boom. The British in England wished to participate and bought land in the Wyoming territory and built lavish ranches. They sent their sons or other male members of the family to run these ranches. To ensure that these young men would stay in Wyoming, they were sent an allowance called a remittance. The local cowboys called these fellows Remittance Men.

Accused of a shooting in his native England, John Stuart is sent to the British owned ranch in America’s Wyoming territory until his name was cleared. Pursued by British authorities, he finds refuge at a homesteader’s home near Laramie City. Being unaccustomed to manual labor due to his high social position, John acquires a new respect for tools and the men who use them. The Norwegian family provides the strength and courage for John to become a western hero.
