The Sisal Baron

From an early age, Christian Haas was infatuated with the adrenaline-inducing prospect of a life in Africa. Feeling adrift in his monotone life in Switzerland, he craved adventure. Through a chance encounter, he left everything behind for a job on a sisal plantation in the remote north of Mocambique and, aged just twenty one, set off with nothing but a suitcase and indefatigable ambition. Thrilled with their new lives in Africa, Christian and his wife soon became embroiled in the independence struggles which proliferated throughout Southern Africa in the late 1960s. Undeterred, the couple was unwavering in their support of their host countries’ struggles. They stayed the course through countless risks and hardships, setting their inner compass towards realizing their ultimate dream.
