In 1864, Khedive Ismail took ownership of Egypt's nascent postal service, the Posta Europea, from its Italian proprietor. By the end of 1865, offices and branches in Egypt increased from nineteen to twenty-eight under the name of Poste Egyptienne.
A branch was established in Istanbul, and Egyptian merchant ships plied the Alexandria-Piraeus-Istanbul-Levant route, solidifying the expansion of the postal network. New branches emerged in Smyrna (Izmir), Jeddah, and, by 1870, in Gallipoli, Beirut, Cavalla, Salonika, Tripoli, and Rhodes. Beyond Aswan, Poste branches sprange up in Souakin, Massawa, Khartoum and Kassala. The Sudan saw the establishment of eight more branches in 1877.
