Paris un Viena is an adaptation into rhymed Yiddish stanzas of a popular chivalric romance well known in Italy in the sixteenth century. The author makes virtuoso use of the lively Yiddish spoken in Italy at the time, while expunging the most obviously Christian motifs in the story. Based on a complete copy of the book printed in Verona in 1594, Shmeruk’s edition is accompanied by all the captioned illustrations as they appear in the original. The Introduction and Appendices discuss the book’s unique characteristics, its style and language, and the issue of the author’s identity.
