The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

J R R Tolkien

The first installment of J. R. R. Tolkien s epic tale, adapted from the original 1981 BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatization, starring Ian Holm and Michael Hordern

With his uncle Bilbo Baggins mysteriously disappeared, Frodo finds himself in possession of a simple gold ring that has great and evil power. It is the Ruling Ring, taken long ago from the Dark Lord, Sauron, who now seeks to possess it again. Frodo must do everything he can to prevent this, and with the help of Gandalf the wizard and a band of loyal companions, he begins a perilous journey across Middle-earth. Sauron s Black Riders are on their trail as they travel to Rivendell, attempt to cross the snow-swept Misty Mountains, and, in desperation, enter the terrifying Mines of Moria.

Tolkien s epic tale of Middle-earth has all the classic ingredients of fantasy and adventure: elves, goblins and trolls, a terrifying dragon, a great wizard, a perilous quest, and a dramatic climax. Widely regarded as a broadcasting classic, these magical adaptations were an instant success when they first aired and continue to delight today.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three installments, newly edited to correspond with the volumes in Tolkien s trilogy. With an all-star cast including Ian Holm, Michael Hordern, Robert Stephens, John le Mesurier, and Bill Nighy, this enchanting dramatization is a must for all Tolkien fans. Includes a new opening and closing narration for the character of Frodo, played by Ian Holm who now stars as Bilbo in Peter Jackson s Oscar-winning film adaptations of the trilogy.
